That’s why CUSEC, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the In-stitute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) have teamed up to use the bicentennial of the 1811-12 New Madrid earthquakes as an op-portunity to raise awareness of the threat. The groups began the bicentennial cam-paign with the Earthquake Outreach Tour, which took place last month in Arkansas, Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri and Tennessee. The theme of the tour was “Identify your Risk, Make a Plan and Take Action.” The messages were tailored for business and resi-dential audiences and were designed to pro-vide the tools needed to prepare should an earthquake occur. The tour highlights such resources as “QuakeSmart” and “Open for Business,” which are tools to create earth-quake preparedness plans. On April 28, Arkan-sans will join with their central U.S. neigh-bors in this event, which is designed to re-mind residents of the earthquake risk along the New Madrid fault. It is expected to in-volve more than a million people through a broad-based outreach program, partnership with media and public advocacy by hundreds of partners. The Shakeout will be centered on a si-multaneous drop, cover and hold drill that will take place at 10:15 a.m. on April 28.
